I have recently become interested in this area having initially seen some images purely by chance. We are a relatively new company set up by academics to deal in intensive image analysis of biological systems, cells, organisms, and tissue samples. We are developing systems biology approaches to create phenotypic signatures. For example, applying 2000 different anticancer drugs to cells produces unique cellular alterations which can be quantified by image analysis. Each compound produces a unique 'fingerprint' readout that is then applied to our mathematical database so that 'unknown' compounds can be screened and determine what the closest match is with 'known' compounds.
I'm not going to pretend to know much about plankton research, but the images I have seen look very ameniable to the imaging software we have that is based on Cognition Network Technology. This is about as advanced as it can get and is virtually a raw programmable language that can be taught to do just about anything.
I would be very happy if someone could contact me about potential collaborative projects in this area. I am thinking of training sets of images, but also my question is around mathematical signatures. Is the mixture of plankton in itself a 'fingerprint' of a certain biology. i.e You could do cluster analysis to put samples into specific categories. I'm not sure what these categories would be, but I imagine types of water, areas of the world, climate types etc would produce them?
I dont know much about the area, but if anyone could enlighten me or who is interested then please dont hesitate to contact me.
My name is Gareth Griffiths and my company is Imagen biotech
